How did you hear about Cirque Nova?
I saw an advert in a disability magazine asking if any people with disabilities would like to learn circus skills.
Why did you join in?
Two years before hearing about Cirque Nova I was on a cruising holiday with a friend where they had circus performers as evening entertainment. I was amazed by their agility, skill and I was just fascinated. This got me fixed on circus and started to go to see shows, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be given a chance to do this myself. When I saw this advert I was so excited but I still wasn’t sure if I would be able to manage it because I have brittle bones.
I was very worried about breaking when doing very physical things but I knew I was strong, having just finished swimming for GB. I wanted to do it for all sort of reasons, ranging from keeping fit as gyms aren’t suitable for my needs, pushing and challenging myself but also to prove people wrong who thought I couldn’t do it.
What do you enjoy most?
I don’t know where to start to say what I enjoy most. I love the people I have met through circus. With a conversation with Jean-Marie on our way back from a show in Norway I said my whole upbringing has been based on living everyday as if it could be your last, so just enjoying life and I guess taking risks.
For me these risks are doing things that may put my bones more at risk of breaking but doing exciting things, not wrapped up in cotton wool. Not many people have this philosophy of life, many people complain and don’t push themselves but I found people in the circus appreciate life and live! So this was a quality that drew me in very quickly and I felt comfortable.
On physical side of things, I love aerial work, especially silks. I have loved hanging upside down for the first time in my life and building up more strength. It’s been great to see the progress you make as individuals, learning more tricks and applying them to other equipment we use.
What are the benefits you have found?
Fitness is a big benefit, not many people have the courage to stretch my muscles properly because they are scared of breaking my bones, but doing the aerial work I get a good stretch and also by the teachers. What's more I feel more agile after a session and general feel good after training as I know I have worked hard and learnt something new. I have also felt proud of doing some amazing shows working with incredible people along the short way since being with Cirque Nova.
